What is Ashtanga Yoga?

Ashtanga yoga is a type of yoga that K. Pattabhi Jois developed and established.  According to common belief, this yoga approach is based on Patanjali’s huge concept of Eight Limb Yoga, which he created over thousands of years and is still in use today. Listed below are the yoga limbs’ eight components:

  • Yama (Rules of conduct)
  • Niyama (Vows)
  • Asana (Yoga poses)
  • Pranayama (Control of breath)
  • Pratyahara (Withdrawal of senses)
  • Dharana (Concentration)
  • Dhyana (Meditation)
  • Samadhi (Tranquility)

It is important to note that the first four limbs of Ashtanga Yoga namely Yama, Niyama, Asana, and Pranayama are based on the essential principles of the practice. These are cleaning actions performed in order to resolve external concerns. Likewise, the other limbs, pratyahara, dhyana, and dharana, represent one’s inner activities. The Ashtanga Yoga method can be successfully performed only when you correctly perform these limbs. This type of yoga is extremely damaging to one’s mental health.

As taught by K. Pattabhi Jois, practising these Eight Limbs and their sublimities of outer practice, including Yama and Niyama, without the support of a skilled practitioner is impossible. The body must be in good shape in order to complete the workouts appropriately. Because if the body is weak and the sense organs are malfunctioning, they will never work correctly.

This is a philosophy that K. Pattabhi Jois put into practise. This is necessary to ensure that the body improves, becomes stronger, and healthier as a result of the practise.

Ashtanga Yoga is the only form of yoga that incorporates the practises of Vinsaya and Tristhana.


Using the Vinsaya practise technique, it is possible to distinguish between Ashtanga and its principles. Internal cleansing is performed by breathing and movement, and is referred to as vinsaya. Each move is accompanied by a single exhalation. Vinsaya’s most popular product, unsurprisingly, is sweat.The fact that you are sweating suggests that you have put the technique into practise successfully. As a result of the asanas, the body is driven to sweat, allowing toxins to be expelled from the body and into the environment. When you workout in this way, your body produces heat. Toxins can be present in sweat. As you gain altitude, your pollution levels climb.

They use yoga poses to promote strength and well-being. This is made feasible by a combination of well-established procedures. Ashtanga Yoga has three positions:

  • focused at harmonising and detoxifying the body, and it is the most basic.
  • entails the opening and cleaning of the energy channels of the intermediate series, which are responsible for purifying the nervous system’s energy channels.
  • final series is the Advanced Series A-D, which stands for Advanced Series A-D. This series compares elegance and strength.


Several different concepts govern yoga practice. It is one of these places, and it symbolises the union of all three places. The posture is the initial stage, followed by the breathing method, and ultimately the Looking Place Dristhi (Discipline of the Looking Place). In order to complete a task, these three people should work together.

There are several breathing strategies that are both contemporaneous and synchronised. At any one time, a single breath can only be used for one action. In Ashtanga Yoga, you will use the Ujjayi breathing method. Both Ashtanga and Tristhana mention the Dristhi series. The Dristhi is the point of emphasis when performing an Asana. This clears and stabilises your mind.

It is only possible to attain this in eight-limb yoga or Ashtanga yoga if the mind is clear and cleaned.
